Forgive and forget, It was a 'mistake', MTN apologises for 200% data price hike

MTN Nigeria has issued an apology to its customers for the unexpected rise in data bundle rates, admitting that the 200% surge was a mistake.

In a statement shared on its Facebook page on Thursday, to its loyal customers who enjoy the "15G digital bundle," the telecommunications giant admitted to its mistake and asked for forgiveness as they work towards a better future.

The statement titled, "Please forgive and forget" Read, "You dey vex. We know. We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200% increase on your favourite digital bundle. We could share serval reasons and provide an explanation, but omo, all that na story. "We don cast. We get it and admit it. Let's just say na mistake.

"In this love season, don't stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. You matter die and we will never stop showing you how much."

On February 11, 2025, it was reported that MTN had significantly increased its data tariffs following approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). 

The commission had granted telecom companies permission to raise prices by up to 50%, citing economic challenges.

However, it was revealed that the price of MTN’s 15GB data bundle jumped from N2,000 to N6,000, while the 1.5TB plan increased from N150,000 to N240,000. 

Other bundles, including the 100GB and 600GB plans, also saw substantial hikes.

MTN, in a previous statement posted on its X handle, defended the increase stating, “Y’ello! Thanks for stopping by, We apologise for any inconvenience and delayed Response. A price increase has been implemented to enhance our services and serve you better, which is why you are seeing the updated amount.”

MTN's recent apology has left subscribers wondering if the new pricing will be reversed or reduced. The lack of confirmation from the telecom giant has sparked debates among customers, who are questioning if the company is staying within regulatory limits.
