Panic swept through parts of Maiduguri on Monday evening after multiple suicide bomb explosions struck crowded areas of the city during the Iftar period, First Daily correspondent reports

This was contained in a statement by the Media Information Officer

HQ Joint Task Force, Sani Uba, on Monday night, and made available to journalists on Tuesday,

According to the statement, the attacks occurred at about 7:05 p.m. on March 16, 2026.

Uba, in the statement, stated that suspected members of Boko Haram detonated improvised explosive devices at three locations: the Post Office area, the Monday Market axis, and the entrance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

The coordinated explosions targeted densely populated spots as residents gathered to break their Ramadan fast, in what officials described as a deliberate attempt to inflict mass casualties and spread fear across the metropolis.

Security forces, including troops of Operation HADIN KAI and the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, responded swiftly, securing the affected areas and preventing further attacks. Emergency responders, including personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), evacuated victims to nearby medical facilities such as the General Hospital, Specialist Hospital, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

It was gathered that medical teams are currently treating the injured, while rescue and evacuation operations remain ongoing.

Preliminary intelligence suggests that multiple suicide bombers may have been deployed into the city as part of a coordinated plot.

The Nigerian Army have intensified surveillance, patrols, and counter-IED operations across Maiduguri to locate any remaining suspects and prevent further incidents.

The military has urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, avoid crowded places where possible, and report any suspicious activity to security agencies.

Operation HADIN KAI expressed condolences to the families of the victims and reiterated its commitment to restoring peace and ensuring the safety of lives and property in the region.
